Students Get Informed on How to Stay Healthy During the Flu Season

Marcus Roberts
Staff Writer

Director of Student Health and Exercise Center Terri Richardson, along with help from student workers, passed out pamphlets and supplies to help students avoid catching colds and the flu during the approaching flu season.

“Today we are teaching everybody proper cough etiquette,” said Brooke Chambliss, a student worker helping pass out the information.

Proper cough etiquette includes: when coughing always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue to avoid spreading cold or flu germs; if tissue is not available cough into your shoulder or upper sleeve.

In addition to the pamphlets, they handed out bottles of Germ-X hand sanitizer and packages of tissues.

To avoid contracting illnesses the pamphlet suggested washing your hands regularly with warm water and soap.  When in the waiting room of a doctor’s office sit at least three feet away from other patients.

Other tips in the pamphlet include:

  • Avoid contact with sick people.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Do not shake hands with a person who is coughing or sneezing.

Richardson said that about 60 students stopped by and took pamphlets and supplies to help avoid colds and the flu.
