Blossoms Sweep Texas Southern

Nicole Ferguson (Fr., Brentwood, Tenn.) set a new school record for hitting percentage, hitting .786 to break her previous school record (.625) set Sept. 21 against Ouachita Baptist as the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (13-6) swept Texas Southern 3-0 at Steelman Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

   The Blossoms won the opener 30-24, game two 30-25, and game three 30-23. The Blossoms outhit Texas Southern .270 to .161 for the match.

   Kara Simnacher (Fr., Victoria, Texas) and Kameshia Melton (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) both notched 12 kills, while Ferguson and Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.) both added 12 kills. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 40 assists, while Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) added 12 digs.

   The Cotton Blossoms return to action on Thursday, Oct. 5, as they travel to Russellville to resume their Gulf South Conference schedule against Arkansas Tech. The match begins at 7 p.m.

BLOSSOMS SWEEP SOUTHERN ARKANSAS

   Led by a 13-kill effort by Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama), the Cotton Blossoms swept the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders 3-0 on Tuesday night at Steelman Fieldhouse.

   The Blossoms cruised to 30-21 and 30-23 victories in the first and second games, but SAU closed the gap in the third match, with UAM eventually winning 30-28.

   Taju was the only player in the match to register double-digit kills, while Martin dished out 34 assists and Kronk notched 16 digs. UAM outhit SAU .136 to .030 for the match, with Martin leading both teams with a .571 hitting percentage, notching five kills and one error in seven attacks.

BLOSSOMS SWEEP CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

   Led by a match-high 14 kills by both Taju and Sayre, the Cotton Blossoms swept to a 3-0 victory over the Christian Brothers University Lady Buccaneers.

   The Blossoms won the opening games 30-22 and 30-28, before falling behind 20-11 in the third game. However, the Blossoms rallied, outscoring CBU 19-5 down the stretch to take the third and decisive game 30-25.

   UAM out hit CBU .192 to .195 for the match.

   Ferguson added 10 kills in the win. Martin dished out 45 assists while Taju added 13 digs and Kronk added 11.
