The UAM College of Technology-McGehee’s annual voter registration drive registered more than 40 individuals for the first time, representing four counties: Ashley, Chicot, Desha and Drew.

The Early Childhood Education Department sponsored the registration drive. Persons registering to vote were given flyers and information concerning Act 1, the College Savings Bond Initiative, which, if passed, would generate $4.1 million in revenue for UAM.

The Initiative, which does not call for new taxes, would provide revenue to be used to connect UAM to the e-Corridor and replace its 22-year-old administrative software, which operates the university’s financial, academic and student records.

According to UAM officials, new higher education bonds are necessary to insure that Arkansas’ colleges and universities are well funded, so that every child in Arkansas who desires can receive a quality in-state college education.

This year marks a record enrollment for UAM with a total enrollment of 3,186 students.
