Sports Information Director The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (1-4) were unable to overcome 441 offensive yards by the Northwestern State Demons, falling 20-3 at Turpin Stadium in Natchitoches. The UAM defense forced NSU to go 4-of-9 in red zone scoring, intercepting one pass in the endzone and blocking a pair of field goals. On UAM’s first possession of the game, the Weevils drove to the NSU eleven-yard line, but were unable to get any closer; as Ryan Guardia (So., Hurly, Miss.) capped an eleven-play, 69-yard drive with a 28-yard field goal to give UAM a 3-0 lead just under four minutes into the game. The Weevils forced the NSU offense to go three-and-out on their next drive, and after a UAM turnover, the Demons seemed poised to take the lead after driving to the UAM two-yard line. However, Ricky Meeks’ third down pass was intercepted in the end zone by Solomon Edwards (So., Wilmot, Ark.) to preserve UAM’s lead. UAM held their lead through the end of the first quarter, but on the first play of the second quarter, Byron Lawrence gave the Demons a 7-3 lead with a three-yard touchdown run to cap an eight-play, 63-yard drive. UAM’s offense was unable to get started in their next drive, and on the Demons’ next drive, NSU drove down to the UAM five-yard line. Unable to get closer, Robert Weeks attempted a field goal from 24 yards out, but Jonathan Thornton (Jr., Morton, Miss.) blocked it to keep the margin at 7-3. On the last play of the half, Weeks nailed a 28-yard field goal to extend the NSU lead to 10-3. The two teams turned in a scoreless third quarter, highlighted by Thornton’s second block of a Weeks field goal on the first drive of the half. In the fourth, Weeks connected with a 38-yard field goal just two minutes in to extend the NSU lead to 13-3; and then on their next drive, Meeks connected with Adam Varnado for a 12-yard strike to push the lead to the 20-3 final margin with 7:19 remaining. NSU outgained UAM 441 to 119, and picked up 28 first downs to UAM’s 10. Wes Ables (Jr., Hampton, Ark.) led the UAM defensive effort, picking up ten tackles, credited with 2.5 tackles for losses totaling five yards. Edwards added nine tackles, one interception, and one pass breakup. The Weevils return to action Thursday, Oct. 5, as they host Henderson State University in the GSC-TV Game of the Week, carried on the UAM Radio Network and televised on Charter Sports Southeast and Cox Sports. Kickoff from Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ![]() Have a comment? Please e-mail us.
