Oct. 5 - White Out the Reddies! - Coach Gwaine Mathews invites all of you to attend the UAM home football game Thursday night at 7 p.m. against the Henderson State Reddies, which will be televised. Make a good showing by everyone in attendance at the game wearing white.

Oct. 5- Tailgating begins at 4:30 p.m. and the Walk of Champions starts at 5 p.m. The Student Activities Board will conduct a $100 cash giveaway for person decorated in the best body paint, and will also host a TV/DVD Combo drawing for a home guest sitting on the visitor's side.

Oct. 6 - Deadline to fill out and submit a graduation application to the Registrar’s Office, Harris Hall 102 if you plan to graduate in May 2007. Unsure of when you may be eligible to graduate? Are you eligible for an Associate of Arts degree? See your adviser to review your degree audit.

Oct. 9- The School of Forest Resource will hold a recruitment day for seniors at from the local high schools in the area and transfer students interested in the Forest Resources.  It will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will last until noon.  It will be held in the Forest Resources building and the Fine Arts building.

Oct. 10 - Deadline to enter the 4th Annual Battle of the Bands/Voices. On Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center, the Pi Kappa Delta/ Debate Society will host its annual competition featuring bands and singers from throughout the region. Admission is $3 with a valid UAM ID and $4 without one. If you have a band or you’re a singer and would be interested in competing, please contact either Brian Rauls at (870)918-5554 or Joel Brown at (870)299-1947. The winner of the competition will be featured on Rock 102.7 Crossett/Monroe.

Oct. 10 - Deadline to pre-register for the Arkansas Forestry Center's workshop and tour of forest herbicide uses and applications. It will be held Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Arkansas Forest Resource at the University of Arkansas-Monticello. Registering for the event is $10 before Oct.10. Oct. 11-13 -University of Arkansas at Monticello's nursing students will attend the ARSNA convention held in Hot Springs, accompanied by Dr. Larry Eustace, division of nursing chair and professor, and Pamela Gourner, SNA sponsor.

Honors

After interviews with the Athletic Committee, Chancellor Jack Lassiter appointed English professor Betty Matthews as Faculty Athletic Representative for UAM. At UAM the FAR works with the director of athletics to monitor the institution’s athletic programs to ensure compliance with the rules of the NCAA and GSC. The individual is not the compliance officer and is not required to determine individual athlete eligibility. The FAR serves as a liaison between student athletes and the administration in the development of policy and the resolution of student athlete concerns.

University Pool -
The indoor swimming pool is used for a variety of classes and Open Swim. Contact the school of Education (460-1062) for information on classes in swimming, scuba diving and aquatonics. Open Swim is a time designated for eligible users to swim laps or recreate in the pool. A current UAM ID card must be presented to enter facility.

The Student Government Association meets from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the U.C. Caucus Room on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The Spatial Information Systems Club meets bi-weekly on Tuesdays at 12:30 in room 209A of the Chamberlin Forest Resources Complex.

The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. 

The Chess Club meets Wednesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. in 316 Babin Business Center.

Baptist Collegiate Ministries serve lunch at noon Wednesdays. First-timers eat free and everyone else eats for $2. Proceeds benefit summer mission trips and other activities.

The Social Work Club meets the first Wednesday of each month.

The Creative Society meets Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. outside the Patio Café. Do you like to write, draw, paint, sing, make stuff, or just be around creative people in general? If so, you should join the Creative Society! Anybody with any interest is welcome to come by and check it out. We are looking for a band or musician to play intermission and help us get Mocha Madness started. We also need people to help us make refreshments and set up before it starts.

The Student Activities Board meets from 12:40-1:30 p.m. in the Gibson University Center House Room on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. The NAACP meets Thursdays at 6 p.m. in Horsfall Hall.

Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship hosts "Renown" meetings Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the MBSF Center (near the tennis courts). Come find out about weekly small groups and upcoming events. All students are encouraged to attend.

The Traffic Committee meets the first Thursday of each month.

Drew Country Writers meet on the third Thursday each month in the First Presbyterian Church library at 6:30 p.m. Members must produce tangible evidence that they write, though they may not have published at this point.

Opportunities

Christians in Action are having a medicine drive until Oct. 9. If anyone wants to donate medicine, contact Brain Jones, campus minister, at 870-723-3482 or go to to Jeter Hall upstairs.

The Medical Science Club will have Tom South, director of Admission at UAMS, speak Thursday Oct. 19 at 12:40 p.m. in room B19 of the Science Center. All students planning on attending medical school please attend.

Get a JOB! - Looking for a student to work in the Physical Plant office, job will include some data entry, filing, answering phones and other office procedures. Please inquire at the Physical Plant.

Oct. 16 - Deadline to enter the Ambassadors Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Pick up an entry form in the Admissions office on the first floor of Harris Hall. A DECORATED PUMPKIN (not carved) must be brought to the Office of Admissions by noon on Oct. 18. When decorating, please rember all pumpkins will be donated to an area children's home. Pumpkins will be judged on idea, creativity, neatness and originality. Prizes will be given for first, second and third place winners. Any recognized campus organization can enter. Only one entry per organization. No entry fee is required.

Donate your books to the library's Book Exchange.

Stop by the library and learn more about the ROTC program and the history of military service at UAM by viewing a display prepared by the Army ROTC entitled "Military Service at UAM: A Proud Tradition."

The Distinguish Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha will be holding ALPHADEMICS study sessions every Wednesday night in Bankston Hall from 6-7:30pm. Tutors will be provided.

Would you like to learn more about voting in Arkansas? Drop by the library and take a look at the special free publications station, right next to the circulation desk. 

The Residential Hall Association is currently seeking interested students to help with a Haunted House or possibly, a Halloween Party.

Wandering Weevil Wheels - Organizations can adopt a bicycle that's part of the inaugural fleet of the Wandering Weevil Wheels. Campus organizations will maintenance and paint the bikes in Wandering Weevil Colors. Contact Gary Marshall, adviser to the UAM Creative Society, at marshall@uamont.edu for more information.

Visit Ireland! - The Criminal Justice and Political Science Field Study will travel to Ireland in mid-May, between the Spring and Summer I semesters. For a cost of $1,500, participants will receive three upper-division political science or criminal justice credits, which can be also be used for general education social science elective. Expected destinations include the city of Dublin, the West Coast, ancient castles and tours of Celtic culture, art and music. If you do not have a valid passport, you need to begin the application process ASAP.

The University of Arkansas at Monticello has been selected to participate in a research study for Nutrition and Physical Activity being conducted by the American Cancer Society. Monetary awards are provided for your participation after each segment of the program. Participants must be 18 years of age or older, not pregnant or lactating and not currently suffering from an eating disorder. The Monticello PEO Chapter offers a $500 one semester scholarship to a female graduate of Drew Central or Monticello High.  Additional requirements include completion of at least 24 credit hours and having a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall.  Upon completion, these should be returned to Admissions by Nov.1 for spring consideration.

NASA Means Business Student Competition 2007 - This year's topic employs NASA 's space exploration mission in the promotion of science, technology, engineering and math education among middle and high school students. University students from a broad range of backgrounds are invited to employ their skills in this capstone program to design and develop:

    * A NASA STEM Education Promotion Plan, and
    * Flagship promotion projects in the form of digital video, print media, and Internet media productions.

Students studying engineering and natural science, advertising, marketing, communication, radio-television-film, journalism and other similar professions are encouraged to form  multidisciplinary teams. Read the Competition Guidelines posted at http://www.tsgc.utexas.edu/nmb.

Announcements

Empty the Trash - Old e-mails placed in the “Deleted Items” folder remain on the university server until the folder is emptied, which may slow the operation of your computer. Right click your mouse on the “Deleted Items” folder and choose empty “Deleted Items” folder. This will permanently remove the old and unwanted emails from the e-mail system.

New McGehee Homepage - Sharon Cantrell and UAM Webmaster Tina Freeman spent months designing a new Web page for the McGehee campus. The user-friendly pages will be continuously updated, and can be accessed from the UAM homepage by clicking on the UAM College of Technology – McGehee link or by going to http://www.uamont.edu/mcgehee/

The UAM Office of Finance and Administration plans to keep a more formal log of vending machine problems on the Monticello campus.  All coke or snack machine problems should be reported to Sharon Bulloch at UAM extension 1023 or e-mail to: bulloch@uamont.edu ; In addition to providing the location, please indicate if the Coca Cola machine contains cans or bottles when reporting problems.

To receive mailed materials from the university, your permanent mailing address must be accurate. If you’ve had a change in your address, stop by the Registrar’s Office (Harris Hall, first floor) or the Student Services office at Crossett or McGehee to complete a "Change in Student Data" form. The form should also be completed if you’ve had a change in your name, local address, or telephone number. There is no charge for making a change in your data. A photo ID is required when the "Change in Student Data" form is submitted.
