Staff Writer The animal science program focuses on cows, horses, pigs, chickens and livestock. The program also uses sheep, goats and dairy cattle. No dogs or cats are allowed in the program, just commercial agriculture. Students wanting to enter the program can earn a bachelor's degree in science with a focus in animal science. All students can join the program; the only prerequisite is a freshman principles of animal science class. Not all universities teach animal science in the state of Arkansas. In the state, five universities teach animal sciences including UAM. Kelly Bryant, professor of agriculture economics, said the program is the second most popular program out of Plant and Soil Science and Agriculture Business. The program varies from other universities because it gives students an advantage of going out and seeing the animals give birth. Whitney Whitworth, assistant professor of animal science, said “The animal science program helps students learn more about nutrition growth and the reproduction of animals.”
Students now get to see calves being
born which helps them learn about animal birth. The Division of
Agriculture now offers a minor in the animal science program. Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ŠThe Voice 2006 Revised 09/13/2006 11:05:03 PM— http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/4_5/animal.htm |
