Be a Super Test Taker

Sheena Garrard
Staff Writer

Phyllis Waldron, Gateway Student Support Services educational specialist counselor, gave students tips on becoming better test takers.

Tips at the workshop included: start preparing for your exams the first day of class, make flash cards, get eight hours of sleep the night before a test, plan reviews as part of your regular weekly study schedule and do not go to the exam on an empty stomach, but also do not eat junk food before the test.

Waldron said, “If you don’t have a clue on multiple choice and true-false tests, then choose two answers that are similar except for one or two words and choose one of those answers.  Also, if an answer calls for sentence completion then eliminate the answers that would not form grammatically correct sentences.  If any part of the statement is false, then the whole statement is false. Absolute qualifiers such as always or never generally indicate a false statement.”

The day of the test, students should get to class early to get a good seat, take time to read directions and work on the easiest part of the test first. Tips for reducing test anxiety include deep breathing, thought stoppage and focusing on the test.

Sophomore Niketta Rodgers said, “The workshop was good; it allowed me to know what to do so I won’t become nervous before a test.”

Waldron also wanted students to know not to rely on ticks to pass a test; studying for a test still gets the better grades.

After the workshop, first-year student Samantha Baker said, “I really enjoyed the workshop. I didn’t think it would be worth my time but it was. I will probably be attending the rest of the workshops this semester.”
