Staff Writer The University of Arkansas at Monticello recently appointed Elizabeth Ruggiero as a visiting professor for the 2006-07 school year. A former graduate of UAM, Ruggiero moved from New York to Warren, Ark., to fulfill her want to give back to the community. Ruggiero, a licensed therapist, operates a marriage and family counseling practice in Warren. Even while teaching and practicing her own counseling center, Ruggiero finds the time to work on her dissertation. She said she believes her career as a practicing therapist also helps benefit the experience her students receive. She said she loves to teach, which has been a dream of hers. Ruggiero said she wants to stay at UAM and continue her teaching career, even though visiting professors usually only stay for one year. “I try and get people excited about learning because excitement sparks a fire that will hopefully keep burning after my class,” she said. First-year student Brittany Gilliam, said she thinks that bringing humor into her way of teaching makes Ruggiero a unique instructor. Gilliam says of her favorite teacher that her usage of humor as a teaching mechanism helps her to understand as well as keeping her awake. First-year student Shiann Ryals said she finds Ruggiero funny and interesting. “Ruggeiro’s teaching style helps me to understand complicated psychology stuff by using funny out-there stories or situations,” Ryals said. Ruggiero said she feels the need to teach
people to give back to the community regardless of their major by
building good people to give back. “I would rather feel that I have positively affected a student than them get an A,” Ruggiero said. Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ŠThe Voice 2006 Revised 09/20/2006 11:05:03 PM— http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/4_3/ruggiero.htm |
