Campus Mourns Loss of Former Professors

Marcus Roberts
Staff Writer

David Lanphier, former associate professor of speech and theater, died Friday, Sept 15. Edward Earl Stone, former instructor of English, died Saturday, Sept 16. Combined, the two provided the University of Arkansas at Monticello with almost three-quarters of a century of service.

Lanphier taught at UAM from 1963 until 2003, acting for a time as the head of the speech department.

After graduating in 1958 from UAM, Stone returned and joined the English faculty in 1965.

Both professors received emeritus status from the university, granting them a continuous honorary position.

Lanphier held a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio University, a Masters of Fine Art from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from Florida State University.  Lanphier also worked with the prestigious Pasadena Playhouse.

Linda Webster, professor of speech, remembers Lanphier’s feelings for the theater.

“He had a real interest in and love for the theater,” Webster said.

Stone grew up in and around Monticello and received his bachelor's degree in English from UAM.

Betty Matthews, professor of English and long-time friend of Stone, remembers him with fondness.

She said he loved to read; he was a marvelous writer and had vivid imagination.

“Edward and I were good friends and I’m going to miss him,” Matthews said.

The family held funeral services for Lanphier Wednesday, Sept 20 at Frazier’s Funeral Home in Warren, Ark. Memorials for Lanphier should be made to the First Baptist Church of Warren or to the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts at UAM.

The memorial service for Stone will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept 23 at the Stephenson-Dearman Chapel in Monticello. Instead of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Methodist Church of Monticello or to a preferred charity.
