Staff Writer Lindsey Kight, the new director of Student Programs and Activities, returned to the University of Arkansas at Monticello in June. Originally from Mississippi, she graduated from UAM in May 2004. She played softball for the Cotton Blossoms while she was a student. After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, she went to Southern Arkansas University for her master’s degree and worked for Student Affairs there. Kight returned to UAM because of her familiarity of the campus; it was a place of comfort for her. Even though she attended school here, she said she feels a separation between her and the students because her classmates are among those now working for UAM, such as Mitch Meredith and Crystal Grimes. The director of Student Programs and Activities position struggles to keep a person for more than one year. For the last four years, there have been four different directors. Kight said, “I love my job and it is very easy to get overwhelmed.” She learned to not do too much too fast. Kight said there is a lot of material to grasp to figure out exactly what her role entails. She said there is a lot of redoing because she can't find information from the previous director. Because Kight has no Greek
letter badge, she said she feels she is at an advantage
along with a disadvantage. She does not show
favoritism toward any one particular group and
stresses being fair to everybody, but she said she doesn’t
know the material well enough to guide the chapters
as she should in her position. She takes each
organization file home with her to learn about each
chapter. As Kight adapts
to her role, she said, “It has helped
that everyone on campus has
been so understanding.” ŠThe Voice 2006 Revised 10/21/2007 07:23:22 PM — http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/4_3/kight.htm |
