Weevils Win GSC, National Honors

WESTMONT, Ill. --- University of Arkansas at Monticello punter Anthony Rodriguez (Jr., Franklin, La.) has been named one of Don Hansen’s Football Gazette’s National Players of the Week for his performance on special teams this past Saturday in UAM’s 27-6 win over Ouachita Baptist.

   Rodriguez becomes the first Boll Weevil to win National Player of the Week honors since Cory Allred in 2004.

   Rodriguez earns the award after leading the UAM special teams effort, booting five punts for 241 yards and averaging 48.2 yards per attempt. Rodriguez booted a 68-yard punt, the seventh-longest in UAM history, and also pinned OBU inside the 20-yard line four of five times.

  Joining Rodriguez as Football Gazette National Players of the Week for Division II are Joique Bell, Wayne (Mich.) State (Offensive), Dwayne Croker, Upper Iowa (Offensive), Joe Winters, Missouri-Rolla (Offensive), Danny Woodhead, Chadron (Colo.) State (Offensive), Sean Smith, Bentley (Defensive), Ben Boswell, Washburn (Special Teams), Wayne Durham, Adams (Colo.) State (Special Teams), and Anthony Driver, Tuskegee (Offensive Line).

GSC Players of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, AL –-- University of Arkansas at Monticello tailback John L. Williams (Jr., Gainesville, Fla.) and punter Anthony Rodriguez (Sr., Franklin, La.) have been named Gulf South Conference Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for the period ending Sept. 16.

   Williams earns his second career award after leading UAM to a 27-6 win over Ouachita Baptist, carrying 28 times for 188 yards (6.7 average), rushing for two touchdowns and totaling 191 total yards against the Tigers. Williams gave UAM a 10-3 lead with a 17-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, and capped scoring with a five-yard run with 1:09 left in the game.

   Rodriguez also collected his second career award after leading the UAM special teams effort, booting five punts for 241 yards and averaging 48.2 yards per attempt. Rodriguez booted a 68-yard punt, the seventh-longest in UAM history, and also pinned OBU inside the 20-yard line four of five times.

   West Alabama’s Jason Riles rounded out the GSC Players of the Week, earning defensive honors.

  The Boll Weevils return to action Saturday, Sept. 23, as they travel to Searcy to face Harding. Kickoff from First Security Field is set for 6 p.m.
