During the week of April 23-27, the Division of Music proudly presented three senior recitals. Karen D. Merritt, of Wilmar, presented her senior flute recital April 23, in the Harris Recital Hall of the Music Building. Merritt performed selected works by Handel, Fauré, Quilter, Duke and Hindemith and was accompanied by Paul Becker, piano professor. Merritt is a flute student of Carrie Teague, adjunct music faculty, and voice student of Beverly Lobitz, assistant professor of music. Merritt is a graduate of Drew Central High School and the daughter of Ted Williams and the late Sarah Johnson. During her collegiate career, Merritt was a member of the concert choir, instrumental ensemble and the marching, concert and jazz bands.
Nicole Payton, of Jonesboro, presented her senior flute recital, in the Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center April 26.
Payton performed selected works by Handel, Gluck, Mozart and Boling and was accompanied on the piano by Becker. Payton was joined for the Boling piece by Music Instructor Lester Pack on bass guitar and Kasey Earl, a junior percussionist, on drums.
Payton is a graduate of Jonesboro High School and the daughter of Curtis and Robin Lindsey of Paragould and Dennis and Karan Payton of Jonesboro.
During her time at UAM, Payton has been a member of the marching band, first jazz band, concert choir and music theatre workshop. She was selected to the Arkansas Intercollegiate Band in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Payton is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, national honorary band fraternity, and Alpha Sigma Tau, national sorority.
Kelly Martin, of Monticello, formerly of Crossett, presented her senior clarinet recital April 27 in the Harris Recital Hall. Martin performed selected works by Gerald Finzi, Charles Standford, “Jelly Roll” Morton, Henry Mancini, John Lennon & Paul McCartney and “The Wizard of Oz,” and she was accompanied on the piano by Becker. In addition, she performed as part of the UAM clarinet quartet with Vanessa Waite, Kelli Stevens and Quartisha Johnson.
Martin is a graduate of Crossett High School and the daughter of Keith and Sherri Martin of Paris. During her time at UAM, Martin has been a member of the concert choir, the marching and concert bands and the clarinet quartet.
Senior recitals are a requirement for all music majors.
