Second Place Winner - Blair Smyth won second place in undergraduate oral presentation.

Blair Smyth of Crossett, a senior wildlife management major, was awarded second place in undergraduate oral presentation at the 91st annual meeting of the Arkansas Academy of Science hosted April 13-14 by Arkansas Tech University in Russellville.

Smyth’s talk, “Habitat factors affecting trap success of swamp rabbits,” presented information developed in an undergraduate research course. The traps are used to collect rabbits so tracking devices can be installed to monitor rabbit movement and habitat preferences.

The rabbit research is part of an ongoing project funded by the Arkansas Forest Resources Center (AFRC) and supervised by Robert Kissell, assistant professor of spatial information systems in the School of Forest Resources.

A UAM second-year graduate student from the Philippines, David General was awarded first place in the graduate student poster presentation. His poster was entitled “The ants of Arkansas Post National Memorial” and documented the 48 species collected over a two-year period. Of note, seven new species of ants were collected for the first time in Arkansas.

The ant research was funded by the National Park Service and the AFRC, and was supervised by Lynne Thompson, professor of forest protection in the School of Forest Resources.

Additionally, other undergraduate and graduate students and faculty made research presentations.
