Boll Weevil Golf - Matt Harshfield practicing for the upcoming tournament. Harshfield played both Basketball and Golf for the Weevils

What do Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan and now our own Matt Harshfield have in common? They all deal or have dealt with the strain of playing two sports.

Harshfield played basketball for the Weevils and now plays with the four member golf team at University of Arkansas-Monticello. Harshfield wakes up at 5:30 a.m. to work out with the basketball team, which he no longer has to do, and then follows up with golf practice at 4 p.m.

“It doesn’t surprise me. Matt is a good young man, and I am happy for him,” said Mike Newell, basketball head coach

Harshfield joins the two-sports club of other Weevils such as Chris Humes, Vincent Jackson and Curtis Nicholas to name a few. There is also a very rare three-sport athlete on campus - Gemma Gibson.

Harshfield will play in his first tournament this weekend at the country club in Magnolia. The tournament started April 13 and will end on April 15. The practice round started Friday. The tournament started Saturday, playing 36 holes, followed by 18 holes Sunday to conclude the tournament.
