Board Meets to Discuss Campus

Michael Ford
Editor-in-Chief

The Board of Visitors met in the Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center April 12. The Board discussed a variety of topics including the termination of the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency exam.

“The CAAP exam will be no more,” Provost David Ray said. “The law is still in effect until July. We’re going to give it one more time on this campus.”

The passing of Senate Bill 203 relieved school districts of their obligation to give the exam. Ray said the exam did not enforce anyone to do well, so it did not give a fair estimate.

Ray also discussed faculty vacancies and retirements. All three retirements this year come from the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences: John T. Annulis, the dean of the department; Edmond Bacon, professor of biology; and Walter Godwin, professor of chemistry.

A retirement session will be held for the retirees May 3 in the Fine Arts Center.

Clay Brown, vice chancellor of Student Affairs, announced the completion of the dining hall while emphasizing how much students liked the new look.

“One student said it used to look like a penitentiary in there, but now it looks like the Olive Garden,” Brown said.

Brown also discussed the university’s purchase of the Trotter House Bed & Breakfast in Monticello.

“We’re trying to refurbish it,” he said. “We’re still going to use it. We’re not turning it into anything.”
