Weevils Lose No. 30

   The Boll Weevils dropped the second game of the doubleheader against the University of North Alabama 12-3.  The game marks the 30^th loss of the season for the Weevils.

   “We got to try to get this thing right,” head coach Ron Hill said.

   Richard Brindle of UNA pitched a superb complete game striking out eight and only giving up three runs on five hits and carried a no hitter through five.

   “I thought (Brindle) did a good job in the second ball game to keep us off balance,” Hill said.

   For the second time on the day, the Weevils used a committee on the mound to try and stem the flow of runs UNA produced.  Four pitchers including short stop Chris Whatley were used, and no pitcher lasted longer than two and two-thirds innings.

   UNA started scoring in the top of the second when Caleb Kidd hit a three run shot on top of the building behind right center.  UNA scored three more runs in the fourth and fifth.

   Craig Caldwell put the Weevils on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to break Brindle’s no hitter. 

   UNA’s Matt Horton extended the lead in the sixth hitting a two RBI single.  UNA scored again in the seventh when Andrew Knerr hit a single that scored two runs.  Matt Horton double to right center that gave UNA a 12-1 lead going into the bottom of the last inning.

   The Weevils came out strong in the seventh loading the bases with three singles by Nate Black, Gustavo Villegas and Lance Labeff.  Caldwell hit a sacrifice fly to score a run and Matt Gardner double to center scoring another.  The game ended with the Weevils on the receiving end of a 12-3 rout.

   The Weevils played again Friday, April 6 where they hosted Ouachita Baptist in a doubleheader.  The first game started at noon.
