Weevils Mauled by Lions

   The University of Arkansas – Monticello baseball team lost 11-5 to University of North Alabama in the first game of a doubleheader.

   “We tried to mount a comeback but got too far behind too early,” head coach Ron Hill said.

   The Weevils used four pitchers in the losing performance. Kyle Thaxton picked up the loss going three innings giving up six earned runs off eight hits.

   UNA took an early lead in the first when Josh Phillips scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Graham. Trey Pollard singled to center scoring Matt Horton. Thaxton walked in a run to give UNA a three-run lead.

   The Weevils closed the gap in the bottom of the inning to within one point when Matt Whatley hit a two-run shot over right field.  It was Whatley’s second home run on the season.

   UNA capitalized on their four hits in the top of the second scoring three runs.  Phillips led off the inning with a solo shot. The next batter, Horton, walked, stole second and was driven in by a single by Graham. Graham also stole second and scored when Pollard hit a single to right center.

   In the top of the fourth, UNA extended their lead to seven on three hits.  Nick Newberry hit a sacrifice fly to score Daniel Johnson. Caleb Kidd singled to center scoring Pollard, and  Phillips hit a single to score Kidd and round out the scoring in the fourth.

   UNA scored again in the sixth, when A.J Reed hit into a double play scoring Kidd from third.  Johnson had a RBI single with two outs scoring Phillips to give UNA an 11-2 lead.

   The Weevils mounted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs. Nate Black hit a RBI single scoring Whatley from second.  Craig Caldwell doubled to center picking up two RBIs in the process. The Weevils came no closer to the lead and were defeated 11-5.

   Whatley, Black and Caldwell picked up two hits in the contest.  Jon Michael Kidd, Josh Mace and Matt Gardner picked up one hit a piece.

   The Weevils played UNA again to finish out the doubleheader.
