Forestry students from the University of Arkansas at Monticello placed second at the Association of Southern Forestry Clubs Conclave competition held March 15-17 at Crossville, Tenn.

UAM finished second in physical events and third in technical events to finish second to Stephen F. Austin State University. UAM has dominated the Conclave competition, winning 28 times in 50 tries. Stephen F. Austin and the University of Georgia are a distant second with five Conclave titles each.

North Carolina State followed UAM in third place, followed by Auburn, Fla., Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, Tennessee, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Kentucky, Alabama A&M, Clemson and Texas A&M.

Conclave is a test of both technical and physical forestry skills. Students competed in eight technical categories – photogrammetry (analysis of aerial and satellite photographs), wood identification, dendrology, wildlife, diameter-breast-height estimation, compass and pacing, pole classification and timber estimation.

The physical events included archery, axe throwing, men’s bow saw, women’s bow saw, chain throwing, Jack-and-Jill (men’s and women’s) crosscut sawing, men’s crosscut, women’s crosscut, knife throwing, log birling (balancing on a log floating in water), log chopping, log rolling, pole climbing and pole felling.

Tyler Wilson, a senior from Rison, won the diameter-breast-height estimation competition, while Matt Voskamp, a junior from Ward, placed third in dendrology. Camden senior Seth Glaze finished fourth in wood identification.

In the physical competition, UAM students won five events and placed second in two others. The team of Covy Brown, a junior from Pine Bluff, and Jeff Price, a senior from Heber Springs, won the chain throw. Brown also won the log birling competition, and Price captured the pole climb.

Zack Diemer, a senior from Little Rock, and Logan Hancock, a junior from Stuttgart, teamed to win the men’s crosscut competition, while Jason Beard, a senior from Rison, won the log chop.

Hancock placed second in archery while the team of Kimber Pedigo, a senior from Star City, and Yvonne Helton, a senior from Dover, placed second in women’s crosscut. Other top four finishers included Glaze (third in men’s bow saw), Pedigo and Diemer (fourth in Jack-and-Jill crosscut) and Beard and Glaze (fourth in the log roll).
