The UAM College of Technology-McGehee held a very successful LifeShare blood drive March 26-27. Students, faculty, staff and the community responded to help alleviate the blood supply shortage. A total of 86 attempts to donate blood were made, with 59 pints of blood collected. As a result, a total of 177 lives will be saved (one pint of blood saves three lives). A special thanks to the UAM COT McGehee nursing students for assisting with the drive.
Felicia Gilmore, UAM McGehee nursing student and Charley Ostrowski,
Anatomy and Physiology student, both donated on the ALYX machine, the
newest technology in blood collection. This automated procedure targets
red blood cells. During the donation process, only red cells are taken
from the donor. Plasma and other components are returned to the donor.
Two units of red cells are collected, thereby maximizing the
individuals’ donation. Pending donor testing, the blood donated on the ALYX machine is immediately ready to be distributed to hospitals. Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ŠThe Voice 2007 Revised 01/13/2008 03:24:31 PM — http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/4_21/blood.htm |
