Sports Information Director RUSSELLVILLE - The University of Arkansas at Monticello's Boll Weevils (3-25, 1-4 GSC) were swept in a doubleheader by the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys, dropping the opener 16-5 and falling 8-1 in the finale. The Wonder Boys scored early and often in the first game, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and pushing their lead to 7-0 after two. ATU led 12-0 before the Boll Weevils broke through in the top of the fifth inning when Jon Michael Kidd (Fr., West Monroe, La.) hit a two-run single. The Weevils added three more runs later in the inning, coming on an error, a passed ball and a Gus Villegas (Jr., Cangues, Puerto Rico) sacrifice fly that cut the Tech lead to 12-5. However, the Wonder Boys responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning and three more in the sixth to seal their victory. Colter Zoch (Jr., La Grange, Texas) suffered the loss for the Boll Weevils after surrendering seven runs, three earned on nine hits in three innings of work. In the nightcap, Arkansas Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the second inning, but the Weevils knotted the contest one inning later on an RBI single by Nate Black (Sr., Rocky River, Ohio). The two teams remained tied until the sixth
inning, when ATU’s Dario Colovic broke the 1-1 stalemate with a solo
homer, and the Wonder Boys went on to score six more runs in the inning
to claim the victory. Black and Villegas both had two hits in the
loss, while David Nix (Fr., Camden) suffered the loss after
allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings, fanning five batters.
