Students, organizations and professors will provide community service at the Baptist Children’s Home April 3, which they are calling Weevil Serve Day. The day gives volunteers a chance to give back to the community.
Director of the Baptist Collegiate Ministry Dave Johnston started the day based on Ouachita Baptist University’s Tiger Serve Day and Baylor University’s Freshman Serve Day. Johnston said community service benefits the students and volunteers, as well as the children.
“I think it will benefit the students serving, because it will not be all about us,” Johnston said.
The organizations working on the project include the BCM, Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship, The Wesley Foundation, Sigma Tau Gamma and Alpha Sigma Tau. Volunteers will paint the Children’s Home’s kitchen, rake the lawn and cut down trees.
Sophomore Jermaine Smiley said Weevil Serve Day will benefit the children of the home by showing them that people in the community care.
Anyone interested in volunteering may come to the BCM April 3 at 2:30 p.m., to go to the Children’s Home. For more information please contact Johnston at 870-367- 5831 or Smiley at 870-723-8332.
