Weevil Welcome Extends Appreciation

Nancy Stephan
Staff Writer

The city of Monticello and the Drew County Chamber of Commerce will host their 11th annual Weevil Welcome Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. in McCloy Park. The celebration shows appreciation for the University of Arkansas at Monticello and the outstanding contributions it makes to the region through its faculty, staff and administration.

Glenda Nichols Bolin, chamber director, invites all university employees and their guests for an evening of fun. In addition to live music, this event offers a chance to win great door prizes donated by area merchants and a hamburger and hotdog cook-out (with all the trimmings). The city employees cook and prepare the food, some of which various businesses in town donated. The Chamber Board of Directors serves the food, which lends to unlimited networking opportunities between the city and university.

“We encourage people to bring their family members,” Bolin said. “Bring your children and grandchildren for this fun evening.”

Annual attendance at this event usually totals around 500 between UAM and the city merchants combined.  Tickets should be available on campus sometime this week. Admission is free to all university employees, and Bolin encourages other persons in the community to attend for a minimal charge of $5 per plate.
