Students have competed in Mud Olympics annually for the past 18 years and remember the experience long after they graduate. Mud Olympics are cosponsored by Intramurals and Student Health Services.

This year over 36 people made of six teams participated and even more came just to watch the events. Teams competed in eight events including: slip-n-slide, egg-n-spoon relay, wheelbarrow race, bucket fill relay, piggy back race, hula hoop relay, crab walk and volleyball.

The overall winners, Alpha Omega Blue, won two of the competitions, slip-n-slide and hula hoop relay. The members who participated included seniors Clayton Howell, Karen Dodd, Jack Cross and Jodie Scott and juniors Stephanie Hackney, Brandi Mize, Stephen Parker and Jonathan Greenlee.

Hackney competed for Sig Tau Team last year and won first place for the second year in a row. She said her experience helped her by knowing the competitions and strategies from previous years. Hackney said “My favorite events were slip-n-slide and the wheelbarrow race, even though I face-planted into the bank.” She said this is not only a competition, but a way to get to meet people and to have fun. Hackney gives the tip to not be afraid to get dirty and just have fun.

Cody Tornberg, a senior, and Jessi Terrell, a first-year student, competed for “Malibu.” In their first year to compete for Mud Olympics, they didn’t know what to expect. Terrell said she enjoyed the egg relay the most, where they used a spoon to carry an egg under string in the mud. Tornberg said he enjoyed the wheelbarrow race the most.

Julie Gentry, director of Intramurals and Recreation, said, “The maintenance and grounds guys do an excellent job of digging the pit every year and making the banks level as well as preparing the entire area – moving bleachers, tents and trash cans as well as extra mowing and spraying for ants.”
