HUNTSVILLE, Texas --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (0-2) were only able to manage 138 yards of total offense as they dropped a 41-3 decision to the Division I-AA Sam Houston State University Bearkats Sept. 9 at Bowers Stadium.

After SHSU’s Derrick Morris returned the opening kickoff 51 yards to the UAM 46 yard line, the Bearkats put together a three play, 46-yard scoring drive capped by a 19-yard touchdown strike from Wade Pate to Michael Malone. The extra point was missed to give SHSU a 6-0 lead less than one minute into the ballgame.

The Weevils’ offense went three-and-out on the next possession, and the Bearkats took full advantage on the ensuing possession, as Andrew Audelin punched in a one-yard touchdown run to cap a nine play, 72-yard drive giving the Bearkats a 13-0 lead.

SHSU held their 13-0 lead into the second quarter, and pushed ahead on the first drive of the quarter to pull ahead 20-0.

The UAM defense managed to stop the Bearkat offense on their next two drives, and the UAM offense began to show signs of life after getting the ball back with 1:42 remaining in the first half. Quarterback Elijah McDonald (So., Morton, Miss.) accounted for all of UAM’s offense on the scoring drive, moving the Weevils as far as the Bearkat 25-yard line, when Ryan Guardia (So., Hurly, Miss.) put the Weevils on the board with a 42-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

The Bearkats extended their lead in the second half, shutting out the UAM offense while scoring 14 points in the third quarter and seven points in the fourth quarter, cruising to the victory.

SHSU’s offense racked up 439 yards of total offense, picking up 22 first downs to UAM’s seven.

The Boll Weevils will return to action Saturday, Sept. 16, playing their first home game of the season against Ouachita Baptist University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., with the campus tailgate party slated to begin at 3 p.m. and the Walk of Champions scheduled for 4 p.m.
