Marching Band Wears New Threads

Drum Major - Justin Anders

The University of Arkansas at Monticello’s Marching Band will hold its first performance in new uniforms on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The band received new uniforms for the first time in over 10 years; the average life of a band uniform is seven-to-eight years.

Second-year drum major Justin Anders said the band needed new uniforms to accommodate the varying sizes and new members. Last year, the Division of Music purchased the material to have several students' jackets made.

“I am extremely excited that the UAM band has finally received a uniform that makes us look as good as we sound,” Anders said.

Assistant Band Director Robert Fellows said after putting in the order last school year, the marching band received its new uniforms for the 2006 fall marching season this July. The university paid for the new uniforms, which ran from $300 to $400 each.

The uniform’s crème color and “kelly green” trim creates a modern and nostalgic look, Fellows said.

“I love the band uniforms, probably the best we’ve ever had,” he said.

University policy does not allow the marching band to give away the old uniforms. Instead, they sold everything for $1 a piece, including hats and plums, or feathers, to Mena High School, and the bibbers, or overall-like piece, to Hamburg High School. The jackets for the old uniforms currently sit in storage.
