The University of Arkansas- Monticello Student Government Association and Student Activities Board held their first combined meeting March 1. SGA works with campus administration and faculty to help address the needs and issues that affect the student body. All students have a standing invitation to participate in meetings. “Everyone is welcome; it gives us a wider variety of suggestions,” said Lindsey Kight, director of student programs and activities. The first issue discussed was the Dumas Disaster Relief Program, UAM’s donation drive for the people of Dumas. “We have had fantastic results for a week’s notice,” Kight said. “Also, I am impressed with the variety of goods people donated. We had an excellent mix of donations.” Items donated included food, clothing, school supplies, personal hygiene items, cash and diapers. Donations came from many individuals and groups from UAM. The deadline for donations passed this Friday at noon, but Kight said she could not see turning additional donations down. The SGA/SAB meeting also discussed Greek Week. Kight said this year’s Greek Week will have a sports theme and begins Monday, March 5. “Greek Week is very important. It gives Greeks the chance to have fun and build a community,” Kight said. “Though they are different this gives them a chance to have fun together.” The meeting also discussed preparations for Spring Fling. Events were discussed but nothing will be firmly decided until the next meeting March 22. Finally, the meeting discussed hosting a step-show for campus Greeks. Topics of interest for the April 19th step-show included prize-money, entry-fees and whether admission should be charged. Students not attending the meeting have no chance to discuss the admission price, or if there will be one. However, Kight said that students’ opinions can be heard even if they do not attend the meeting. “If you have class or work and miss the meeting you can always call or e-mail us,” Kight said. “We will listen.” Contact Kight by phone at (870) 460-1396 or by
