Big Bats Lead Blossoms Past OBU

Kevin Sims
Sports Editor

Offensive explosion propels the Cotton Blossoms to their 11th win of the season. The Blossoms beat Ouachita Baptist 9-1 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The mercy rule came into effect in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Kayla Temple led off the inning with a solo home run.

“We just needed one run, and I got lucky and hit it over,” Temple said.

The Blossoms opened scoring in the bottom of the second when Temple hit a double off the wall, scoring Gemma Gibson from first.  Meredith Heckel doubled to left center, scoring Temple and giving the Blossoms a 2-0 lead.

Beth McGhee of OBU hit a solo home run to start the third inning.  Kate Brady did not allow another hit after the home run.  She finished the game allowing two hits and striking out four to improve her record to 5-2.

The Blossoms fired back in the bottom of the third.  They loaded the bases early with two walks and a single by Brady.  The Blossoms had trouble putting a run across, getting two outs without scoring a run.  Temple battled at the plate gaining a walk and scoring Dunn.  Terri Rodgers extended the inning reaching base off an error and knocked Brady across in the process.  Heckel capitalized on the error by hitting a grand slam and giving the Blossoms an 8-1 lead.

The game was called in the fifth on Temple’s home run, and the Blossoms improved their over-all record to 11-7 and 2-1 in the Gulf-South Conference.
