Kevin Sims Sports Editor The Gulf-South Conference named senior Nate Newell as a first team All-Conference-West player for his performance last season. “I have been doing basketball for over 30 years,” Head Coach Mike Newell said. “Nate is one of the top 10 players I have ever coached.” Newel led the Boll Weevils last season in several offensive categories including scoring (668), field goals made (186) and three-pointers made (104). During the season, Newell passed former teammate Billy McDaniel in career points scored and came within 42 points of tying former Weevil Danny Reed as the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s all-time scoring leader. “I didn’t really want to pass Billy because he was my favorite UAM basketball player of all-time,” Newel said. Newell‘s career stats make him one of the greatest basketball players to play at Monticello and in the GSC. In the GSC, Newell finished his career No. 1 in free throws (641), No. 2 in points (2,168), No. 2 in three-pointers made (355) and No. 7 in points per game (19.4). Along with the first team all-conference honors
this season, Newell won first team honors during his 2004-2005 season
and second team honors for the 2005-2006 season. He also was named the
2006 NCAA Division II South Region Tournament Co-MVP. “I was named on the second team last year, and I worked hard this summer to be named first team,” Newell said. “I don’t care about any award but it was good to be named.” Have a comment?
