The Boll Weevil baseball team lost a heartbreaker 5-4 to Gulf-South rival Arkansas Tech in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday, Feb 20 at home. With the loss, the Weevil's record drops to 2-8 for the season.

“We battled pretty well,” Head Coach Ron Hill said. “If we could get the hits to fall we would have won.”

The Boll Weevils took an early lead when Matt Gardner knocked Chris Whatley in with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. A batter later, Jon Michael Kidd singled to right-center, scoring Josh Mace for a 2-0 lead.

Tech came back in the third when Barrett Davis hit a home run to open the inning.  Josh Holloway scored Tyler Keller with a single down the third base line.  Brad Green ended the scoring with an RBI single to right field to take the lead 3-2.

Tech scored again in the fifth when Jantzen Black doubled to left-center, scoring Tony Sanchez. Davis hit his second home run on the day in the sixth to give the Wonder Boys a 5-2 lead.

The Boll Weevils mounted a come back in the bottom of the sixth.  Gardner scored when Nate Black reached first on a fielder’s choice with bases loaded.  Gus Villegas hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Kidd and cutting the Tech lead to one.  Matt Whatley lined out, with bases loaded, to end the rally and the hopes of a come back.

Kidd led the team going 2-3 with an RBI and run scored.  C. Whatley finished the day 3-4 with a run scored.  Other notable performances came from M. Whatley (1-4) and Ryan Pilcher (1.3).

Tyler Price pitched for six innings giving up five runs on eight hits and striking out four in a losing effort.  Colter Zoch made an appearance pitching one scoreless inning, striking out one.

The Boll Weevils started a 12-game road stretch in Florence, Ala., Saturday, Feb. 24 against North Alabama.
