Weevils Lose in Extra Innings

   The University of Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils lost to Gulf-South rival Arkansas Tech 6-3 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday, Feb 20.  The loss drops the Weevils' record to 2-7 on the year.

   Errors took their toll on the Weevils.  They made five errors, counting for two of Tech’s six runs. 

   “The five errors cost the game,” head coach Ron Hill said.

   Tech opened scoring when Brad Green singled in the top of the first, scoring Josh Holloway.   The Weevils took the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs.

   Matt Whatley scored first when he bounced a ball off the scoreboard for his first home run of the season.  Whatley finished the day 2-2.  Haley Hougen scored, giving the Weevils the lead when Gus Villegas singled to left.

   In the top of the fourth, Tech’s David Gaines reached base on a throwing error and later scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Craig Cameron, tying the game at two.  Tech took the lead in the fifth when Holloway scored off an error.

   The Weevils battled back from a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to put the game into extra innings.  Hougen hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Josh Mace and tying the ballgame at three a piece.

   Tech won the game in the eighth, scoring three runs off three hits, giving the Boll Weevils their seventh lose of the season.

   Hougen finished the game 2-3 with an RBI and run scored.  Other Notable performances came from Mace (1-2), Villegas (1-2), Matt Gardner (1-4), Ryan Pilcher (1-4), Jon Michael Kidd (1-4) and Josh Franks (1-4).

   David Nix threw for five innings giving up one earned run off four hits.  He stuck-out three in his performance.

   “I thought the pitching looked pretty good,” Hill said.  “We just left too many people on.”
