The Cotton Blossoms held on to an eight-game win streak with a
3-0 victory against Texas Wesleyan in the second game of the HSU/US Army
tournament Friday.
Kate Brady threw seven shut-out innings to pick up her fourth win of the
season. She gave up eight hits and struck out five in the contest.
“I was just trying to throw strikes,” Brady said. “I had a great defense behind
me today.”
The Blossoms took an early lead in the first. Meredith Heckel led off the
inning with her third home run on the day. The next batter, Sarah Reed singled
to center setting up Becca Tipton to knock her in with a base hit up the
middle. Jenny Dunn hit a double off the left field wall, scoring Tipton and
giving the Blossoms a 3-0 lead.
The Blossoms defense took over from there.
In the top of the seventh, with a runners on first and second and no outs,
Wesleyan’s Rachael Bachelder hit a shot to third base. Reed stayed in front of
the ball, getting hit in the knee in the process, and managed to get the force
out at third. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice when Gemma Gibson made
a stop and flipped the ball to second baseman Lauren Brooks for the second out
of the inning. Brady struck out the next batter, Alicia Mendoza, to end the
game and secure her shut out.
The Blossoms improved to a record of 9-6 with
the win. The Blossoms finished the tournament Saturday, Feb. 24 against
Texas Woman’s.
