Nursing Student Plans for National Convention

Nancy Stephan
Staff Writer

Several students from the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s Student Nurses Association plan to attend the 55th Annual National Student Nurses Convention held in Anaheim, Calif., April 11-15.

The theme for this year’s convention is “The Wonderful World of Nursing!”  The event offers student nurses, chapter advisors and state consultants from 50 states the opportunity to listen to several outstanding speakers in their field.

Speakers include the General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing in London England and the incoming Chief Executive Officer of the National League for Nursing Beverly Malone (PhD, RN) and Rear Admiral Christine Buzek-Kohler, 21st director of the Navy Nurse Corps.

In addition, the convention offers plenty of nursing review courses, seminars and focus sessions examining timely topics in the field of nursing. Students will network with one another during workshops, seminars and student activity tables. NSNA candidates will conclude their run for office and new officers will be elected and inducted during the convention.

The UAM SNA delegates to the Arkansas Student Nurses Convention House of Delegates will gain first-hand experience with the national political process that takes place in the NSNA House of Delegates. Judges will present awards during the ceremony to the winning entry in the area of global community service. Entries submitted by SNA at UAM moves Arkansas closer to winning the State of Excellence award.

Assistant Professor of Nursing Pamela D. Gouner serves as sponsor for the student nurses and plans to accompany them to the convention.
