   The Cotton Blossom softball team evened up its overall record to 6-6 with a 10-1 victory over Williams Baptist Saturday, Feb. 17.  The mercy rule went into effect in the fifth inning.

   Leah Vaughn held a no-hitter through four innings until WBU’s pitch hitter Conna Strong hit a double in the top of the fifth.  Strong later scored giving WBU its lone run and breaking the Blossoms' two-game streak of holding opponents scoreless.

   “I was disappointed giving up the hit, but there was lots of defense and run support today, which helps a bunch,” Vaughn said.

   Vaughn improved to 1-2 on the season with the decision. She struck out six in five innings, giving up the one hit.

   The Blossoms came out strong in the first inning, scoring two runs.  Sarah Reed knocked in lead-off batter Terri Rodgers with a single up the middle.  Three batters later, Jenny Dunn singled to left, bringing in Reed.  Reed scored again in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch to give the Blossoms a 3-0 lead.

   Big bats came through in the fourth.  The Blossoms hit three home runs in a seven-run inning.  Becca Tipton started the inning off with a solo blast over centerfield.  Joleah Oxner doubled in left center and was knocked home when Gema Gibson doubled.  Gibson scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Rodgers.  Reed emptied the bases on a two-run homer to right center on the next at bat. Dunn hit a two-run homer to end the scoring.

   Reed led all batters going 3-3 with three RBIs, a run scored and a home run. Dunn, Tipton and Oxner went 2-3, and Gibson and Meredith Heckel went 1-3.

   “We had a good pitching performance from Leah Vaughn and we swung the bats well,” Head Coach Alvy Early said.
