SGA Lacks Student Involvement

Michael Ford
Editor-in-Chief

The Student Government Association met Feb. 13 in the Capitol Room of the John F. Gibson University Center to discuss ideas for potential campus events. With only four students in attendance, few final decisions could be made.

“I think it would help to have more people’s opinion,” said Lindsey Kight, director of student programs and activities. “There are only four people here trying to speak for the entire campus. The more people we get involved, the more likely we’ll be able to please the campus.”

SGA President Corrie Ross said it was hard to get people involved due to the University of Arkansas at Monticello being a commuter campus.

Despite the lackluster turnout, those in attendance discussed several upcoming events including a tentative schedule for the annual Spring Fling:

  • April 9 - Bumper Cars
  • April 10 - Carnival Day
  • April 11 - Crawfish Boil

Though SGA remains undecided about activities for the latter part of the week, other suggestions included airbrush tattoos, spades and dominoes. The organization continues to discuss potential prize ideas.

Those in attendance also discussed possible events for March. SGA Treasurer Jamie Dunn entertained a few ideas including a foam party and a “fun day.”

“A fun day would be different things all through the day, like a water balloon fight,” Dunn said.

Dunn said a foam party would be easy to clean up, but the group ultimately decided the cost of a dispenser and the need to conduct the event off-campus made it unfeasible.

SGA and the Student Activities Board are considering combining their meetings into one biweekly meeting. Kight encourages students with ideas to contact her and to attend these meetings.

Eric Bell, a political science major, said, “I think these meetings are great, but more people need to get involved. Involvement will help us grow.”
