Division of Music Gains Faculty Member

Linna Jones
Staff Writer

Sissy Pierce joined the University of Arkansas-Monticello’s Division of Music this semester to teach double-reed instruments as well as clarinet and saxophone private lessons.

Band Director Gary Meggs selected Pierce on her qualifications as a double-reed player, and he said her position here will benefit the program.

“Its going to raise it to a higher level,” Meggs said.

Born in El Dorado, Pierce now lives in the small community of Grapevine near Rison. She taught band in the Rison school system for 33 years. She started her college education at University of Central Arkansas and finished at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where she received her Bachelor’s of Arts in music education. She specializes in playing the oboe, but can play all band instruments and piano.

Pierce said she likes working at UAM and commented on how she learned about the position.

“Mr. Meggs asked me to do this, and I thought it was something new and interesting to do with my career. I really like it,” Pierce said.
