Blossoms Beat OBU in Game Two

Kevin Sims
Sports Editor

The Cotton Blossoms softball team improved its tournament record to 2-0 with an 8-0 victory over Ouachita Baptist Friday, Feb. 16.

Big hits helped the Blossoms breeze past Gulf South Conference-rival OBU. The mercy rule went into effect at the top of fifth inning, which was the only thing that could stop the Blossoms bats.

“We hit the ball well,” Head Coach Alvy Early said. “Ouachita is better than the scoreboard showed.  We played better than them today.”

Freshman Becca Tipton opened scoring in the second inning with a two-run homer that went over the scoreboard.  Tipton finished the day 1-3 with two RBIs.  Later in the inning, Gemma Gibson scored on a throwing error to give UAM a three-run lead.

The big hits continued in the bottom of the third when Jenny Dunn hit a two-run shot over the left field wall.  Dunn led the Blossoms offensively, going 2-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

“It felt good,” Dunn said. “It was a better team effort though.  We got hits at crucial times.”

Gibson, 1-2 with two runs scored and one RBI, started a three-run fourth inning with a solo home run over center field. Meredith Heckel singled through the left side, scoring a run.  Dunn knocked in her third run of the day on a fielder’s choice to give the Blossoms the eight runs needed to end the game after five.

“I think the chemistry is all ready there,” Gibson said. “The team has a good basis.  We are really competitive.”

Kate Brady threw a complete game shutout to improve her record to 2-2.  She gave up eight hits and had one strike out.

With the win the Cotton Blossoms improved its record to 5-6.
