Copy Editor If you see only one movie this year, save yourself and do not let it be "Ghost Rider." Though everyone knows that you cannot expect comic-based movies to blow you away, this one sets a standard for underachievement that will not be easily defeated. "Ghost Rider" delivers everything that should be hated about the movie-going experience. People were pulling so hard for Nicolas Cage not to mess it up, but he did just that. The pores of this movie seeped with cheesy-as-hell jokes. They were so bad that my alter-ego almost smashed the screen and threw popcorn on the people laughing. The storyline, which should have focused on the Ghost Rider (you know being the title character and all), devolved quickly into a love story. The comic-book Ghost Rider would wade through an army of demons just to fight an army of demons. This one got attacked one at a time by only four monsters in the whole movie. On a positive note, the four fights resolved so quickly that you did not have time to realize how much they sucked. Two other things about this waste of film: The first being the absolute lack of imagination on the part the creators to tell the story of the demonic Ghost Rider. In one part of the movie, a demon makes mention of Johnny Blaze catching on to being the Ghost Rider. The problem with that being, the Ghost Rider does not need Johnny Blaze for anything than a place to be. The Ghost Rider has been around for eons; in Johnny Blaze, the demon Zarathos kicked the demons around with hell-fire and brimstone. In later Ghost Rider comics, Danny Ketch played host to the “avenging spirit.” In both comics, the creature that became the Ghost Rider acted independently of his host. I understand Hollywood would rather pretend Blaze has some control over his demon-spirit possessor, but I think that part of the story could have been fleshed out by flushing the crappy love story. The second waste of time and effort came from Sam Elliott and Nicolas Cage’s moonlight ride to save the heroine. Elliott’s character somehow knew that he could change into the Ghost Rider one more time to ride off into the darkness with Cage. The net effect of this ride created a generic backup point that the Ghost Rider could ride fast. In my opinion, do not waste your money on this
movie. The story could have been a really cool supernatural brawl. There
could have been cool Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ŠThe Voice 2006 Revised 01/13/2008 03:22:12 PM — http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/4_17/ghost.htm |
