The University of Arkansas-Monticello Forestry Club held its Conclave team-building field day on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Conclave, an event that showcases Southern schools in forestry-related activities, began in the 1960s. Though UAM did not compete in the original Conclave, the forestry building has trophies from the '70s, '80s and '90s. To be awarded the Conclave trophy, teams must win six out of 10 years.

Though UAM dominates Conclave, the Forestry Club raises funds to travel on its own. Seth Glaze, president of the Forestry Club, said old and new ideas have come together this year to put UAM in a possible fifth victory for this decade.

“We sell firewood mostly. This year we created a calendar showing us doing different events in the pictures,” Glaze said. “We had a lot of success with the calendar this year. We will probably do it again.”

Lynne Thompson, professor of forestry and Forestry Club adviser, said for this year’s team to win at Conclave they will have to begin practicing both physical and technical forestry skills.

The training phase, which begins right after the field day, has so much importance that the club elects a Conclave captain.

Teamwork also plays an important part. After field day the second place winners of the events help to make sure the winners train, as well as being there in case of an emergency substitution.

Though field day showcases the physical aspects of what it takes to win Conclave, with such events as the Jack and Jill crosscut, archery and log birling -- an event that places two competitors on opposite ends of a log in the water, first person to fall off loses -- technical events play a key role in victory.

“If there are 14 schools in Conclave and you win a physical event you get 14 points.” Thompson said. “If you win a technical event, you get 1.5 points for each participant school.”

Thompson said UAM placed second last year because of the technical events, though usually they perform well. Thompson looks forward to winning this year and upstaging rival Stephen Austin University.
