Sports Editor Crichton swept the Boll Weevils baseball with a 6-3 loss in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 17. “Bottom line, we didn’t get the job done,” Head Coach Ron Hill said. Colter Zoch held off the Crichton’s bats for five innings but struggled in the sixth. Zoch gave up six runs in five and two-thirds innings. He struck out six and gave up eight hits and one walk. Monticello took an early lead when Chris Whatley scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the first. Crichton tied the game in the third with a D.J. Merriwether solo home run. The Boll Weevils took the lead back in the bottom fourth, scoring two runs. Nate Black (1-3) singled to open then inning. One batter later, Gus Villegas (2-3) hit a home run to give Monticello a 3-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, Crichton’s bats took over. Brad Fly and Joe Melton hit back-to-back home runs to open the inning. Anthony Tomasetti and Turner Barnes hit RBI singles, and Tony Gonzalez picked up an RBI with a double. Crichton held onto the 6-3 lead for the rest of the game. The loss dropped the Weevil’s overall record
to 2-6. They play a doubleheader against Arkansas Tech at home Tuesday, Feb.
