Sports Editor The Boll Weevils baseball team lost 16-10 in the opening game of a doubleheader against Crichton Saturday, Feb. 17. Even though senior right fielder Haley Hougen had a two-home run performance, pitching took a toll on the Weevils. The Weevils used five pitchers in the loss, including outfielder Trae Baker and shortstop Chris Whatley. No matter who they used, Crichton kept hitting. Monticello scored first when Nate Black singled, driving in Whatley in the bottom of the first. Crichton took over the lead in the fourth, scoring two. Crichton’s Joe Melton scored first on a passed ball. Later in the inning Terry Reed scored on a passed ball, giving Crichton a 2-1 lead. The Boll Weevils answered the two runs by scoring five in the fourth. Matt Whatley scored first on a balk with bases loaded. The next batter, Hougen, hit a homer to left-center giving Monticello a 5-2 lead. Josh Mace extended the lead 6-2 with an RBI single. Crichton tied up the game in the fifth when Melton singled, scoring Brad Fly and Nick Garner. Crichton took over the lead, scoring 10 runs the sixth and seventh. The Boll Weevils tried to mount a come-back in
the bottom of the seventh, but could not score enough. Hougen led off the
inning with his second home run of the day. Mace walked with bases loaded
cutting the lead down to eight. Matt Whatley singled, scoring a run and Black had a
RBI sacrifice fly. Lance Labeff struck out to end the rally and the game. The loss gives the Boll Weevils a 2-5 record for the year. Sports Information contributed to the article. Have a comment?
