Sports Editor The University of Arkansas-Monticello baseball team opened
the season 1-0 with a 6-2 win over Harding University Feb. 6. “It
was exciting for us to get started with a W,” said Ron Hill, head coach for the
Boll Weevils. “We started
the right way.” Colter
Zoch, junior right-hander, pitched six shut-out innings only giving up one hit
in the contest. He finished the day with six strike-outs and two walks. “We had
a lot of team chemistry," Zoch said. "Everyone pulled for each other. We
did all the small things.” The
Boll Weevils started the day on a bad note when third baseman Jon Michael Kidd
bobbled a ground ball, which let Harding lead-off batter Dare Saul reach first. Zoch made quick work of the base runner by picking him off at first base. Kidd
made up for the lead off error at the plate going 2-4 with an RBI and a run
scored. “Errors
are part of the game,” Kidd said. “You have to play through it.” In the
bottom of the fourth, senior right fielder Haley Hougen broke the scoreless tie
by taking the first pitch over the left field fence. That hit started a four-run rally that gave the Boll Weevils' pitching
staff enough of a lead to win the game. Hougen
finished the day 1-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Other
notable performances came from Gus Villegas (2-4), Ryan Pilcher (2-4), Josh Mace
(1-3) and Chris Whatley (1-5).
