Blossoms Fall to Lady Muleriders

Paul Smith
Sports Information Director

MAGNOLIA (Jan. 27) - Led by Kim Davis’ 27-point, 10-rebound night, the Southern Arkansas University Lady Muleriders (8-10, 5-2 GSC) dealt the University of Arkansas at Monticello's Cotton Blossoms (7-14, 2-5 GSC) a 75-65 defeat at the W.T. Watson Center Saturday.

The two teams fought neck and neck in the early going, with neither team to pull ahead by more than four points through the first half. SAU took the lead with 1:37 remaining and held UAM scoreless down the stretch, extending their lead to three (29-26) at the half.

The Lady Muleriders took charge in the opening minutes of the second half, pulling ahead by nine (41-32) with 14:17 remaining in the half. However, the Cotton Blossoms stormed back, pulling to within two (49-47) after a Gemma Gibson (Jr., Dodd City, Texas) lay-up with 8:23 remaining.

The Blossoms tied the game with 5:13 mark after a Gibson lay-up, but were unable to pull ahead as SAU took the lead for good at the 3:26 mark after a pair of Davis free-throws and cruised through the last minute to the victory.

Davis’ 27 points led all scorers. Gibson led UAM with 23 points, and Sherelle Shipp (Sr., Wilmar) added 12 points in the Blossoms’ loss. The Blossoms return to action Friday, Feb. 2, as they travel to Searcy to face Harding at Rhodes Field House with a 6 p.m. tip-off.
