Weevils Fall Short Against Southern Arkansas

Paul Smith
Sports Information Director

MAGNOLIA (Jan. 27) - The University of Arkansas at Monticello's Boll Weevils (8-11, 3-4 GSC) were outscored 41-20 in the second half as they dropped a 65-48 decision to the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders Saturday at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center in Magnolia.

The Weevils fall to 0-7 in road games this season.

The Weevils controlled the contest in the early going, pushing ahead by as many as six (11-5) after a Nate Newell (Sr., Monticello) three-pointer with 14:07 remaining in the contest. However, SAU clawed back, pulling ahead after a Mori Turpin lay-up with just under five minutes to play in the opening half.

The Weevils quickly reclaimed the lead and pushed ahead by four (28-24) at the half.

The Muleriders took charge in the second half, taking the lead for good at the 12:16 mark after Leon Stone hit three free throws. SAU cruised to the victory.

The 17-point margin of victory represented SAU’s biggest lead of the night.

The Boll Weevils will look to get back on the winning track Friday as they travel to Searcy to face Harding at Rhodes Field House with an 8 p.m. tip-off.
