Three University of Arkansas at Monticello faculty members will lead an 11-day summer field trip through the spectacular canyons of northern Arizona and southern Utah June 17-28.

The trip will be led for the 27th consecutive year by Jim Edson, professor of geology. He will be joined by William Shea, professor of history, and John Hunt, assistant professor of biology.

The field trip will offer participants the opportunity to choose from four undergraduate courses and nine graduate courses. The trip costs $1,595 (not including round-trip airfare to Las Vegas), and covers ground transportation, lodging, a meal allowance, entry fees and tuition for one three-hour course. Persons wishing to take a second course will be charged an additional fee for tuition.

The trip includes visits to Zion National Park, the north rim of the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon National Park.

Undergraduate courses to be offered are two natural history courses – one in geology and a second in the biology of natural ecosystems – and two field courses in history and cultural and physical geography.

Graduate courses include a special topics workshop designed to enhance the content background of K-6 elementary teachers in the sciences and social sciences, advanced geology, flora and fauna of the canyonlands region, advanced field biology, special topics in advanced science teaching, geology of the canyonlands region, field geology, world geography and a field study of the historic sites of the region.

An additional three units of continuing education credit are available in a course on the natural history of the canyonlands region of northern Arizona and southern Utah.

Each of the courses offered qualify for “No Child Left Behind” funds from local school districts or educational cooperatives.
