Staff Writer The University of Arkansas-Monticello Weevils basketball team used Austin, Texas native Torre Doty to propel a win over Arkansas Tech, 87-78 Sat. Jan. 18. Doty posted his third double-double this season with 42 points and 11 rebounds versus a Tech team that could do nothing to stop him. Scoring 29 in the second half, Doty shot 13-17 from the field, going 3-4 from behind the arch. He went 13-16 from the charity stripe and had only one turnover in his 37 minutes of play. Seniors Nate Newell and MJumbe Williams assisted Doty in scoring. Williams (Compton, Cali.) added 16 to the box-score and Newell, a Monticello native, added 13 in his quest for becoming the UAM all-time scorer. Newell, who shot 3-21 from the field, needs 99 points to pass former four-time All-American Billy McDaniel and 263 to pass the leading scorer Danny Reed. With nine games remaining, Newell will need to average 29.1 for the rest of the season. After the first half, UAM led by the slim margin of 43-40. Terrance Whiters (Tech) posed a problem for the Weevils. Whiters went on a 12-point tear during the second half to give Tech the lead by seven. With the score knotted at 69, Doty's made a
free-throw that put UAM in the lead, which they kept. UAM made its last field goal with 4:17 left in the game but made 11 free-throws to close out the game. The Weevils improve to 2-3 record in conference and 7-10 overall. Have a comment? Please e-mail us.
