Blossoms Sneak Past Christian Brothers

Paul Smith
Sports Information Director

Sherelle Shipp (Sr., Monticello, Ark.) hit a lay-up with two seconds left to propel the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (6-13, 2-4 GSC) to a 64-62 victory over the Christian Brothers University Lady Buccaneers (7-11, 0-6 GSC) on Saturday night at Steelman Fieldhouse.

The two teams started the game at a snail’s pace, as UAM missed their first eleven shots from the field. Midway through the first half, the Lady Buccaneers took a 12-11 lead; and cruised into the half with a seven-point (29-22) lead.

The Blossoms shot 21.2 percent (7-of-33) from the floor in the first half.

The Blossoms clawed back in the second half, finally taking a lead (41-39) on a three-pointer by April Eason (Sr., Memphis, Tenn.) with 11:52 remaining.

The two teams traded leads down the stretch, with UAM taking a two-point lead into the final minute. Mary Shea Hackett drilled a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to set up Shipp’s game-winning basket.

Shipp joined Gemma Gibson (Jr., Dodd City, Texas) and Bia da Silva (Sr., Sao Paolo, Brazil) with 13 points to lead UAM. CBU’s Kat Butler scored a game-high 14 points.

UAM rebounded to shoot 56.5 percent from the floor in the second half. The Blossoms held a 45-38 rebounding advantage for the night.

UAM returns to action Saturday, Jan. 27, as they travel to Magnolia to face Southern Arkansas with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off from the W.T. Watson Center.
