Blossoms Go 3-6 Over Break

BLOSSOMS DROP HEARTBREAKER TO LADY STATESMEN

CLEVELAND, MISS (Jan. 13) --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (5-11) shot just 37.4 percent from the floor as they fell 65-49 to the 10th-ranked Delta State Lady Statesmen (13-2) on Saturday afternoon at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

   The Lady Statesmen controlled the first half, taking as much as a nine-point (24-15) lead late in the first half, but the Blossoms were able to narrow the gap to four (29-25) on a Sherelle Shipp (Sr., Wilmar) lay-up with three seconds remaining in the half.

   The Blossoms took charge in the first five minutes of the second half, pulling ahead by as many as four (35-31) after Bia da Silva (Sr., Sao Paolo, Brazil) hit a pair of free throws. However, the Lady Statesmen took over, taking the lead at the 10:08 mark after a Jennifer Rushing jumper and DSU never looked back, pulling ahead by as many as 18 en route to the victory.

   Shipp led UAM with 13 points. DSU’s Rushing led all scorers with 16 points.

GIBSON’S 23 POINTS LEAD BLOSSOMS PAST OUACHITA

MONTICELLO --- (Jan. 11) Gemma Gibson (Jr., Dodd City, Texas) scored 23 points to lead the Cotton Blossoms to a 67-57 win over the Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers on Thursday at Steelman Fieldhouse.

   OBU jumped ahead early, taking an 8-2 lead with just under six minutes gone in the opening half; but UAM quickly tied the game on back-to-back three-pointers less than a minute later. The Lady Tigers inched ahead once again, pulling ahead by as many as eight (26-18) with 5:42 remaining, before the Blossoms began to claw back, eventually taking the lead (31-29) on a three-pointer by Addie Lees (Jr., Plainview, Texas) with two seconds remaining in the half.

   The Blossoms continued their momentum into the second half, pulling ahead by 12 (49-37) after a jumper by April Eason (Jr., Memphis, Tenn.). OBU narrowed the gap to four (53-49) with 6:12 left, but UAM was able to extend their lead down the stretch, extending their lead back to ten on a pair of free throws by Gibson with three seconds left, sealing the victory.

   Gibson’s 23 points led all players. Shipp added 10 points in the winning effort. The Blossoms held a 43-34 rebounding edge for the night.

BLOSSOMS DROP GSC OPENER TO HARDING

MONTICELLO --- (Jan. 6) The Harding Lady Bisons (10-2, 1-0 GSC) outscored the Cotton Blossoms 45-32 in the second half as the Lady Bisons picked up a 76-66 victory over the Cotton Blossoms in both teams’ Gulf South Conference openers.

   UAM opened scoring just under two minutes in with a Shakia Sanders (Jr., Chester, S.C.) lay-up, and the Blossoms held their lead through the first half, extending it to as many as ten (12-2) after a Gibson lay-up with 14:11 remaining.

   Harding narrowed the gap to one (14-13) just three minutes later after a Catherine McMenamy lay-up, and tied the game (18-18) with 4:35 remaining in the half, before UAM pulled away again, pushing ahead by as many as seven (29-22) with 2:39 left in the half. Harding pulled to within three (34-31) on a McMenamy lay-up with just over thirty seconds left, a margin that would stand going into the half.

   Harding took the lead with 18:38 left on a lay-up by Jacque Fredendall, and the Lady Bisons never would relinquish the lead, pulling ahead by as many as twelve (76-64) in the last minute of the game.

   Gibson’s 17 points led all scorers. Shenai Limbrick (Sr., Houston, Texas) and Eason both added 10 points, with Eason grabbing 12 boards.

   Fredendall led Harding with 16 points.

BLOSSOMS TOP BENEDICT

ARKADELPHIA (Dec. 30, 2006)--- Lees paced the Cotton Blossoms with 16 points as the Blossoms picked up their second consecutive win, topping Benedict 66-62 at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia on Saturday.

   UAM opened the game with an early lead, pulling ahead by five (7-2) after a da Silva  jumper five minutes in. However, Benedict fought back, pulling ahead and taking a seven-point (32-25) lead at halftime.

   The Cotton Blossoms took charge over the first five minutes of the second half, taking the lead at the 15:11 mark after a da Silva layup.

   UAM held on to the lead until Benedict’s Aja Trotter nailed a three-pointer with 8:19 remaining to give Benedict a 50-48 lead. The Blossoms reclaimed the lead for good with 4:54 remaining as Shipp hit a layup, and while Benedict would pull to within one with less than a minute to play, a pair of free throws by Gibson with 10 seconds left sealed the UAM victory.

BLOSSOMS DOWN ANGELO STATE

ARKADELPHIA (Dec. 29, 2006)--- Gibson scored 21 points to lead the Cotton Blossoms to an 81-64 win over Angelo State University on Friday at the Henderson State Classic at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia.

   The Blossoms controlled the game early, opening up with a 22-8 lead over the first nine minutes of the game. UAM would control the game into halftime, going into the intermission holding an eleven-point (38-27) lead.

   UAM continued to hold Angelo State at arm’s length through the second half, pulling ahead by as many as 20 (81-61) before ASU buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to set the final margin at 17.

   ASU’s Kandra Lakey scored a game-high 24 points. Gibson’s 21 points led UAM, while Limbrick added 11 points, and both da Silva and Eason added 10 points

BLOSSOMS DROP PAIR AT LLOYD CLARK CLASSIC

CLEVELAND, MISS (Dec. 19, 2006) --- The Cotton Blossoms have had their losing streak extended to four with a pair of losses at the Lloyd Clark Classic hosted by Delta State University, as they fell 86-84 to Albany State on Monday and 70-64 to West Alabama on Tuesday.

   In the tournament opener, the Blossoms took an early lead in the first half against Albany State, pushing ahead by eight (17-9) with 13:09 remaining in the half. UAM pushed their lead to as many as 12 (46-34) after a three by Sarah Ward (Fr., Cleveland), but ASU cut the margin to 10 at halftime.

   ASU took charge in the first five minutes of the second half, opening the half on a 15-2 run to pull ahead with 14:33 remaining. ASU would hold the Cotton Blossoms at arm’s length the remainder of the way too seal the victory.

   Gibson led all scorers with 19 points. Sanders added 17 points and Tasha Owens (So., Fox, Ark.) added 15 points in the loss.

   Against West Alabama, the Blossoms scored the first basket of the game 15 seconds in, but UWA quickly took the lead and UAM would never lead again.

   UAM threatened late in the second half as Shipp drained a three-pointer with 2:21 remaining to tie the game at 64, but UWA closed the contest on a 6-0 run to seal the win.

   Limbrick led UAM with 12 points. Gibson added 11 in the loss.  

POOR SHOOTING DOOMS BLOSSOMS

FORT MYERS, FLA (Dec. 9, 2006)--- The Cotton Blossoms shot just 21.6 percent from the floor for the game as they fell 75-38 to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Saturday at Alico Arena in Fort Myers.

   The Eagles improved to 12-0 with the win.

   UAM opened the game with a 5-1 lead over the first 2:30, but FGCU quickly took the lead (7-5) on a three-pointer by Steffi Sorensen with 16:00 remaining in the opening period. FGCU took a 12-point lead at halftime, and it was downhill from there for UAM, as the Eagles used an 18-0 run to extend their lead from 25 (44-19) to 43 (52-19) with 7:14 remaining.

   Gibson led UAM with 12 points.

HOT-SHOOTING FLORIDA GULF COAST DOWNS BLOSSOMS

FORT MYERS, FLA (Dec. 9, 2006)--- Florida Gulf Coast University shot 52.9 percent from the floor, holding the Cotton Blossoms (2-6) to 30.2 percent shooting as the Eagles rolled to a 94-47 victory over UAM at Alico Arena on Friday night.

   FGCU improved to 11-0 with the win.

   The Eagles started the game on a 13-0 run over the first three minutes and led by as many as 24 (44-20) in the first half.

   After shooting 40 percent in the first half, UAM could only manage a 23.7 percent clip in the second half.

   Lees was UAM’s leading scorer with nine points. FGCU held a 44-33 rebounding advantage for the game.
