Weevils Drop Heartbreaker to Reddies

Paul Smith
Sports Information Director

ARKADELPHIA (Jan. 18) --- Despite a 29-point night from Nate Newell (Sr., Monticello), the University of Arkansas of Monticello Boll Weevils were unable to overcome the size of the Henderson State University Reddies, falling 68-66 at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia.

The Reddies held a 42-22 rebounding advantage for the contest and outscored UAM 40-14 in the paint.

UAM fell behind early as HSU pulled out to a nine-point (14-5) lead five minutes in, but the Boll Weevils would respond as Newell drained four consecutive three-pointers to fuel a UAM run that saw the Weevils pull ahead by 11 (34-25) with 4:03 remaining in the half.

HSU narrowed the gap, pulling to within two (36-34) at halftime.

In the second half, the Reddies took an early lead, going ahead by five (45-40) with 15:10 left, but UAM once again took over, pulling ahead by six (52-46) after a MJumbe "J.B." Williams (Sr., Compton, Calif) free throw with 11:05 left.

HSU tied the game at 52-52 with 8:46 left, and picked up the lead just one minute later, and the Reddies would never trail again.

Newell's 29 points led all scorers. Williams added 16, and Torre Doty (Sr., Austin, Texas) added 11 in the loss.

The Weevils will return to action Saturday, Jan. 20, as they host Arkansas Tech at Steelman Fieldhouse. A
2 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.
