The UAM Boll Weevils hosted
#13 preseason ranked Southwest Baptist Bearcats and suffered
their first loss of the season, falling 98-73. The Bearcat
attack was lead by Sophomore Luke Folkerts, who scored 23 points
on 7-13 from deep.
The Bearcats came off of a loss to Rockhurst University to claim
the controlled victory. They shot 15-35 from the three point
line and only shot 24 shots inside the line. They shot a total
55.9 percent from the field and made 17-20 from the free throw
line.
The Boll Weevils were led by none other than Senior
Monticellonian, Nate Newell. Newell poured in 33 as he closes in
on John Haugh's sixth ranked All-Time Score of 1,589. Newell has
an unofficial 1,576 points with tonight's binge. Newell was
followed by Senior Torre Doty of Austin, TX, with 14 points.
The Bearcats began the game by getting their first two points
off of Matt Rogers free throws. Sophomore of Rochester, MI, Ryan
Nelson, gave UAM its first lead of the game after he shot a
three pointed that was assisted by Newell. Nelson had nine
points and nine rebounds on the night. That was the only lead
UAM had in the game.
After the UAM score, the Bearcats went on a 13-0 run. The
Bearcats would go on to get up by as many as 36 points in the
second half. The score was 87-51
with 5:10 remaining in the game. UAM went on a 14-2 run at the
end of the game and managed to work the lead down to 22 but was
not enough to overcome
the large stretch made earlier in the game.
UAM has five more home games before they take off for Hawaii to
play five
away games. The UAM Boll Weevils will return to action on their
home court
Thursday to take on West Georgia. The game is scheduled to begin
at 6:00 PM.
