Several UAM Students Serve in Military

Lori Andrews
Staff Writer

Many soldiers attend the University of Arkansas at Monticello to pursue a degree of their choice. According to Carol Dolberry of the Registrar’s office, 1.5 percent of UAM students are active members or have been in the military.

Jordan Wisener, a sophomore Business Administration major from North Little Rock, is an active member of the military. Wisener served in Iraq along with his cousin Sam Wisener, a UAM alumnus, from March 2004 to March 2005. Wisener was stationed in Bagdad for his time in Iraq. Before going to Iraq, he was required to drop out of his spring classes to leave.

“I had no problems and everyone was helpful with everything,” Wisener said.

When he returned, he took summer classes and got back on track toward earning his degree. Wisener plays football for the Boll Weevils. He lost a year of football during the time that he was in Iraq. However, he can still play for another year to keep his four-year eligibility.

On campus the ROTC program helps students to develop leadership skills. Courses involve activities that help students to become a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. These activities involve combat water survival, leadership reaction course and night land navigation among other activities to enhance thinking and leadership skills.

Lieutenant Kernel Jackson, assistant professor of military science, said, “ROTC is a great program for leadership and is the number one in the world. Anyone can benefit from leadership skills.”

Jackson and the Business Department are working together to develop leadership classes for senior business degree students to help them after graduation. Scholarships are available for students.
